Apple Halts Cheaper Vision Pro to Focus on AI Smart Glasses Development
Apple has halted development of a more affordable, lighter version of its Vision Pro headset, known internally as the N100, originally planned for release in 2027, to prioritize accelerating its smart glasses projects aimed at competing with Meta's AI-powered eyewear. The company is focusing on two smart glasses models: the N50, which will pair with an iPhone and lack a built-in display, potentially launching as early as next year with a market release in 2027, and a more advanced display-enabled version, initially slated for 2028 but now being expedited. These smart glasses will feature cameras, microphones, AI capabilities, and health-tracking functions, relying heavily on a revamped Siri assistant expected in spring 2026 to provide robust voice-based interaction. Apple aims to position these glasses as fashionable accessories with customizable frames and materials, equipped with a custom Apple chip but dependent on iPhone connectivity for full functionality. This strategic pivot reflects Apple's need to catch up in the rapidly evolving AI wearables market, where Meta has established a strong presence with over 2 million units sold of its Ray-Ban stories and recently launched Ray-Ban Display glasses featuring integrated screens. Despite shelving the affordable Vision Pro, Apple continues to work on refreshing its current Vision Pro headset, possibly introducing an M5 chip by year's end.
