Quezon City Bans Single-Use Plastics in Government Facilities

Quezon City in the Philippines has announced a comprehensive ban on disposables and single-use plastics, including bags, packaging, cutlery, PET bottles, and styrofoam, within the City Hall compound and all government-run facilities, effective April 21, 2025. Under Executive Order No. 3, employees are required to bring their own reusable containers and eco-bags, while visitors may receive food in disposable packaging, but cannot bring these items inside the buildings. Food deliveries are permitted only if containers are returned to designated recycling booths, and plastic-packaged deliveries are prohibited within government buildings. The policy aims to address the environmental and health risks posed by microplastics and plastic waste, which contribute to flooding, pollute waterways, and harm marine life. The order reinforces the Quezon City Green Public Procurement Ordinance, promoting sustainable alternatives and mandating penalties for non-compliance among vendors, employees, and officials. Mayor Joy Belmonte emphasized the initiative as part of a broader effort to reduce plastic use, shift public behavior, and advance citywide sustainability.
