Kipyegon, Chebet Set Multiple World Records in Eugene
At the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, Kenyan athletes Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet set new world records in middle- and long-distance running events. Kipyegon broke her own women's 1,500 meters world record with a time of 3:48.68, improving on her previous mark of 3:49.04. Chebet became the first woman to run the 5,000 meters in under 14 minutes, clocking 13:58.06 and surpassing the former record held by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay. Chebet, who holds Olympic titles in both the 5,000m and 10,000m, delivered a powerful finish with a 28.8-second final 200m to secure the historic time. Both athletes expressed pride and motivation in pushing each other to achieve these milestones, with Chebet noting she came prepared to set a world record inspired by Kipyegon's efforts. The event also featured other top international athletes, making it a star-studded competition celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Prefontaine Classic.
