Zelenskyy, Western Leaders Intensify Pressure on Russia with Sanctions and Military Support
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for expanded US sanctions on the entire Russian oil sector, beyond the recent sanctions on two companies, to intensify pressure on President Vladimir Putin and force him into peace talks. During talks in London with European leaders, Zelensky emphasized the importance of sustained military and economic pressure, including the provision of longer-range missiles to Ukraine, to counter Russian aggression and protect critical infrastructure like Ukraine's power grid. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte affirmed that the new US sanctions are effectively pressuring Putin, who is facing shortages in money, troops, and ideas. Zelensky highlighted the significant impact of sanctions on Russia's economy, citing issues such as fuel shortages and regional bankruptcies, and stressed that sanctions remain one of the most painful tools against Putin personally. The coalition supporting Ukraine has agreed to intensify sanctions targeting Russian oil companies, terminals, tankers, and related infrastructure as part of a broader strategy to weaken Russia's war effort. These coordinated efforts reflect ongoing international resolve to sustain support for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia amid continued conflict.
