Jeff Bezos-backed startup Slate Auto is preparing to launch an affordable, highly customizable electric vehicle—priced around $25,000—that features a modular design described as 'Transformer'-like. In the lead-up to its April 24 reveal event, Slate has placed various concept vehicles on California streets, each disguised with wraps promoting fake businesses and showing off different body styles, including a pickup, SUV, and hatchback resembling the Rivian R3. This unconventional marketing strategy highlights the vehicle’s adaptability, which has become a key selling point, and suggests buyers will be able to customize their vehicles extensively. The company’s base model is reportedly called the 'Blank Slate,' and Slate has applied for the trademark slogan 'We Built It. You Make It.' Observers note that all prototype vehicles share modular components and off-road features, hinting at accessory options similar to the Ford Bronco. Slate Auto has secured over $100 million in funding and aims to disrupt the market by offering a low-cost EV with extensive personalization.
