Teen Arrested for 2023 Cyberattacks Disrupting Major Las Vegas Casinos

A teenage suspect has surrendered to Las Vegas authorities in connection with the 2023 cyberattacks that targeted multiple casino properties, including MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment. These attacks, which occurred between August and October 2023, were attributed to an organized cyber threat group known by several names such as Scattered Spider, Octo Tempest, UNC3944, and 0ktapus. The suspect faces multiple charges including obtaining and using personal identifying information to harm or impersonate others, conspiracy to commit extortion, and unlawful acts regarding computers. The FBI's Las Vegas Cyber Task Force, alongside local police, led the investigation. The Clark County District Attorney’s Office is seeking to prosecute the juvenile as an adult due to the severity of the offenses. The attacks reportedly cost MGM approximately $100 million and disrupted online services and casino operations.
