October Supermoon Largest of 2025

News summary

The October Harvest Moon—also the first and largest supermoon of 2025—reaches peak full illumination at 11:48 p.m. EDT on Oct. 6 and will appear full across time zones on Oct. 6–7. At lunar perigee it will be roughly 223,000–225,000 miles (≈359,000–362,000 km) from Earth, making it about 14% larger in apparent diameter and around 30% brighter than a typical full moon. This is the first of three consecutive autumn supermoons, followed by the Beaver Moon in early November (the year's closest) and the Cold Moon in early December, with another brief supermoon appearance in early January 2026. Observers are encouraged to watch near moonrise for the strongest color and the moon illusion; bright Saturn will be nearby, and the supermoon's glare may reduce visibility of fainter meteors from the Draconids (peak ~Oct. 8) and the Orionids (best Oct. 21–22).
