Charges Announced in Detroit Neurosurgeon Murder

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced charges against Desmond Burks for the April 2023 murder of prominent Detroit neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover. Hoover was found shot twice in the head, wrapped in a bloody carpet, and dragged to the attic crawlspace of his Detroit home. The investigation, which spanned multiple states and countries, revealed that Burks and Hoover had an intimate relationship, with Burks sometimes charging Hoover for sexual services. Evidence included approximately 4,000 text messages between the two and cell phone data showing Hoover's phone traveling between their homes. Burks faces multiple charges, including first-degree premeditated murder, felony firearm possession, and larceny. Initially a person of interest, Burks was released after questioning due to insufficient evidence but was later arrested as the investigation progressed.
