Martin Lewis Warns of Underpayment for UK Workers

Martin Lewis has alerted UK workers to check their payslips after a report revealed that approximately 371,000 individuals on minimum wage were underpaid in 2024. He emphasized that expenses related to uniforms and equipment should not reduce earnings below the minimum wage, and that all working hours, including overtime and on-call time, must be compensated. With the minimum wage set to rise by 6.7% in April to £12.21 per hour for those aged 21 and over, it is crucial for workers to ensure they are receiving the correct amount from their employers. Lewis highlighted that even well-known companies have been named for failing to comply with minimum wage laws, which underscores the need for vigilance among employees. He urged workers to not hesitate in addressing potential underpayment issues directly with employers or through organizations like HMRC or ACAS for support. Baroness Philippa Stroud echoed these concerns, stressing the importance of empowering low-paid workers to assert their rights and improve their employment conditions.
