The Open grants LIV Golf players qualification exemptions
The Royal & Ancient (R&A) has announced that players from the LIV Golf League will now have the opportunity to qualify for the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush this July. The leading player in the top five of the LIV standings, who is not already exempt, will secure a spot following the LIV Dallas event. This decision aligns with a similar move by the USGA, which also granted an exemption to a LIV player for the upcoming U.S. Open. R&A CEO Mark Darbon emphasized the importance of offering pathways for LIV players, recognizing their competitive standings in the sport. This development reflects a softening attitude from major championships regarding LIV Golf players' inclusion, which had previously faced challenges in gaining recognition. The Open will take place from July 17-20, and this new qualification route complements existing pathways for other tours.
