NC, TN Expand Hurricane Helene Food Aid, Support

Residents of Western North Carolina and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians affected by Hurricane Helene can apply for disaster food assistance via the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP). Applications for D-SNAP open on October 18, 2024, with pre-registration starting on October 15, and the program will provide up to $120 million in benefits to over 150,000 individuals. Tennessee residents impacted by Helene in specific counties can also access D-SNAP, and a temporary Hot Foods Waiver has been approved for 13 counties, allowing the purchase of hot meals. Efforts to support the recovery include fundraising campaigns by Lowe's and Harris Teeter, which collectively raised millions for the American Red Cross. Furthermore, Operation Airdrop and other organizations continue to deliver supplies to affected areas. These comprehensive measures aim to aid recovery efforts and support those who have suffered significant losses due to the hurricane.
