Czech skier Tereza Nova awakens from medical coma after severe injury

Czech skier Tereza Nova has been awakened from an induced coma nearly four weeks after sustaining severe injuries during a training crash on January 24 at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The 27-year-old suffered a traumatic brain injury, carotid artery damage, and a fractured eye socket, necessitating surgery and a period of artificial sleep. Following a gradual reduction of her medication, her condition has stabilized, allowing for her transport back to the Czech Republic for further rehabilitation. Nova's partner and national ski coach, Ondrej Berndt, expressed gratitude for the support received and emphasized the need for privacy during her recovery. The incident adds to a troubling season in skiing, marked by other serious injuries and a fatality among athletes. Nova had previously competed in multiple World Cup events and the 2022 Winter Olympics, but had not achieved top-30 finishes in her career.
