Bosnian Truck Drivers Block Goods Movement Nationwide Over Taxes, Barriers
In Bosnia, around 600 truck drivers initiated a nationwide protest by blocking the movement of goods at key cargo terminals near Sarajevo and borders with Croatia and Serbia, demanding government reforms in the transport sector. The protest, organized by Logistika representing 47,000 transport workers, stems from grievances over excessive taxes, administrative barriers, and an EU 90-day cap limiting how long Bosnian drivers can operate within the bloc without leaving, which has forced many drivers to re-register in neighboring EU countries. Drivers also seek refunds on excise taxes for oil, shorter border procedures, and greater digitalization to reduce red tape and delays. Passenger traffic has slowed but was not blocked, and the Bosnian Communications and Transportation Ministry has begun to address some administrative issues, with further negotiations and protests expected to continue. The strike highlights the critical challenges facing Bosnia's transport sector, valued at 4.7 billion euros, amidst complex government structures and EU regulations. This ongoing dispute underscores the broader tensions between national transport needs and EU rules affecting Bosnian drivers.
