UK Proposes Weight-Based Tax for Vehicles
Proposals for a new vehicle tax system based on weight could significantly impact electric vehicle (EV) drivers, who often face higher weights than petrol and diesel cars. Nick Molden, a specialist at Emissions Analytics, argues that taxing vehicles by weight would reflect their environmental damage, as heavier cars contribute to pollution through tyre wear and road surface damage despite having no tailpipe emissions. The average weight of cars in the EU has risen from 1,328 kg in 2001 to 1,457 kg in 2020, largely due to the prevalence of heavy EVs like the Tesla Model Y, which weighs over 2,000 kg. Countries like Norway and France already employ similar weight-based tax systems, which have proven effective in reducing environmental impacts. Molden's proposal includes a reduction in Vehicle Excise Duty for lighter vehicles, incentivizing consumers to choose smaller, less polluting cars. The UK government is expected to implement a weight-based tax starting in 2025, which could transform the current vehicle taxation landscape.
