Houston Reverend Disavows Girlfriend’s Racial Camp Mystic Flood Remarks
Reverend Colin Bossen, senior minister at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston, publicly condemned his girlfriend, Sadé Perkins, following her racially charged tirade about the tragic flooding at Camp Mystic, where 27 girls and counselors died. Perkins criticized the camp as a "white-only conservative Christian camp" and claimed that conservative Texans would show less outrage if the victims were Hispanic or Black, remarks that sparked widespread backlash. Bossen disavowed her comments, emphasizing they do not reflect the values of his congregation or the Unitarian Universalist principles centered around love and dignity for all people. He apologized to his congregation and the families affected by the tragedy, expressing regret for the harm caused by Perkins' statements. The church's board president, Joan Waddill, also condemned Perkins' remarks as offensive and contrary to the church's values, while offering support to those impacted by the tragedy. Despite Perkins holding a position on Houston’s Food Insecurity Board, she lost her role amid the controversy, as her comments drew criticism from religious and community leaders alike.
