Over 100 Responders Search Wolf River Tennessee for Man Swept Away During Child Rescue

Multiple agencies in Memphis conducted an extensive search for 31-year-old Thaddeus Smiley, who went missing after attempting to rescue a struggling child in the Wolf River. The incident occurred near a sandbar where 11 people were gathered, and while the child and another rescuer made it safely to shore, Smiley was swept away by the river's strong currents, moving at about six miles per hour. Over 100 volunteers and first responders, including sheriff's deputies, fire department personnel, and dive teams, used boats, sonar equipment, and drones to search a mile-long stretch of the river, but challenging conditions have complicated efforts. Officials emphasized the dangers of the Wolf River, especially due to unpredictable currents and debris that can trap even experienced swimmers. The search paused in the evening and was expected to resume the following day, with prayers extended to Smiley's family and friends. The child Smiley tried to save was unharmed.
