Motorcyclists Gather for Blessing of Helmets in Portugal

Approximately 180,000 motorcyclists attended the ninth annual Pilgrimage of the Blessing of Helmets at the Our Lady of Fatima shrine in central Portugal, marking the largest turnout in the event's history. Under the theme 'We are shaped and guided by what we love!', participants began the pilgrimage with a parade carrying a statue of Our Lady of Fatima, followed by a Mass where their helmets were blessed. The rector of the sanctuary, Carlos Cabecinhas, noted that many motorcyclists seek divine protection for their journeys, as well as to remember those lost in motorcycle accidents, of which there were 8,936 reported in Portugal in 2023, resulting in 124 deaths. The gathering is supported by various motorcycle clubs and police forces, reflecting the event's growing significance. The major pilgrimage to the Fatima shrine occurs annually on May 13, commemorating the Virgin Mary's 1917 apparition to three shepherd children, two of whom were canonized by Pope Francis in 2017. Ongoing processes may lead to the canonization of the third child, Sister Lucia.
