SMX, A*STAR Launch Nation-Scale Plastic Traceability Platform Singapore
SMX (Security Matters) PLC and Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) have partnered to develop a national plastic circularity platform that utilizes molecular tagging and blockchain technology to create digital passports for plastics. This system will track and trace over 5,000 tonnes of post-consumer plastic waste annually, enhancing transparency and recycling efficiency to support Singapore's Zero Waste Masterplan. The initiative aims to reduce plastic incineration, currently at 94%, and increase recycling rates, potentially generating around S$100 million annually by lowering incineration costs and boosting sales of certified recycled resin. The platform will integrate SMX's chemical marking, blockchain, and patented reader technology with A*STAR's advanced spectroscopic detection, AI, and material profiling research, creating an auditable digital twin for plastic lifecycle tracking. By 2026, semi-industrial deployment is expected, with full-scale operations by 2027, providing a compliance pathway for extended producer responsibility regulations. Additionally, the introduction of the Plastic Cycle Token, a blockchain-backed asset, is designed to monetize recycled plastic and replace traditional carbon credits, promoting investment in sustainability.
