Wales Appoint Former Scotland Coach Steve Tandy Head Coach
Steve Tandy has been appointed as the new head coach of the Wales national rugby team, taking over from Warren Gatland on September 1, 2025. Tandy faces the challenge of rebuilding the team following a record 18-match losing streak, which ended with a victory over Japan in July. His first match in charge will be on November 9 against Argentina, followed by fixtures against Japan, New Zealand, and world champions South Africa. With extensive coaching experience including stints with the Ospreys, Scotland's defence coach, the Waratahs, and the British & Irish Lions, Tandy is seen as a key figure in Wales' five-year strategy to restore the team to competitive status ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Welsh Rugby Union CEO Abi Tierney described his appointment as a keystone for sustainable success, emphasizing Tandy's connection with the young, talented Welsh players and his potential to unify the rugby ecosystem. Tandy expressed pride and excitement in leading his home country through this rebuilding phase.
