Madonna Biopic Shelved Universal, Netflix Series Expected
Julia Garner has shared details about her intense audition process for the long-delayed Madonna biopic, revealing that she had to learn how to dance and sing in front of Madonna herself to secure the role. Despite not being a trained dancer or professional singer, Garner embraced the challenge by channeling Madonna's confidence during the audition, which she described as owning the room and convincing Madonna she deserved the part. The project, initially announced in 2020 and later shelved by Universal Pictures in 2023 due to Madonna’s Celebration tour, is reportedly still in development, potentially being reimagined as a Netflix limited series with producer Shawn Levy involved. Garner confirmed on the SmartLess podcast that the biopic is “supposed to still happen,” emphasizing that great projects often take a long time to come to fruition. Madonna has been actively involved in the development of the biopic, having intended to direct the film and worked with writers Erin Cressida Wilson and Diablo Cody before the project's delay. The continued interest from Garner and the evolving production plans suggest that Madonna's story will eventually reach audiences, either as a film or a series.
