Aberdeen Approves 7% Tourist Tax Generating £6.8M Annually
Aberdeen City Council has approved a 7% visitor levy on overnight stays in the city, set to take effect in April 2027, making it the highest tourist tax rate in the UK and one of the highest in Europe. The levy will apply to hotels, B&Bs, hostels, guest houses, camping sites, caravan parks, and self-catering accommodations, but will exempt cruise ships, motor homes, and individuals receiving disability payments. With the average hotel room costing around £70 per night, visitors will pay an additional £4.90, which is higher than the 5% rates in Glasgow and Edinburgh but comparable to major European cities like Barcelona and Rome. The council projects the tax could generate up to £6.8 million annually, funding improvements such as city centre upgrades, cultural and sports initiatives, and attracting major events and conferences to boost local leisure and business tourism. While some councillors and tourism officials argue that the levy will enhance Aberdeen’s competitiveness and visitor economy, residents and businesses express concerns about the potential negative impact on tourism and local trade, given Aberdeen’s different profile compared to luxury holiday cities. The council emphasizes that the funds will support infrastructure used by tourists and aim to foster sustainable growth in the region’s visitor economy.
