The Boston Celtics have cut guard/forward Lonnie Walker IV just before the start of the 2024-25 NBA season, creating an open spot on their 15-man roster. Despite averaging 7.3 points and showing promise during preseason, Walker’s departure was primarily due to the team's luxury tax situation, which left them $7 million over the second luxury tax apron. The Celtics have also waived three other players—Jay Scrubb, Ron Harper Jr., and Hason Ward—while trimming their roster to align with the regular season's limit. These moves reflect Boston's commitment to maintaining roster flexibility for potential in-season acquisitions. Walker, who signed an Exhibit 10 contract, expressed his eagerness to be part of a winning culture but ultimately could not secure a permanent spot.
