Israeli Offensive Displaces Nearly 180,000 Palestinians in Gaza
Nearly 180,000 Palestinians have been displaced in Gaza amid an intensified Israeli military offensive aiming to capture 75% of the territory and defeat Hamas, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and other UN-backed groups. The campaign has involved forced evacuations and frequent attacks on displacement sites, including a deadly airstrike on a Gaza City school sheltering displaced families that killed more than 30 people, including children. Humanitarian conditions have deteriorated severely, with an almost three-month blockade on food, medicine, and supplies, leading to widespread hunger. Under U.S. pressure, Israel has allowed limited food aid into southern Gaza through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a controversial U.S.-backed group criticized by the UN and aid agencies for bypassing established humanitarian networks and potentially undermining humanitarian principles. The UN and international organizations have condemned the attacks on displacement sites and called for unimpeded humanitarian access and civilian protection, warning that new aid delivery plans not coordinated with the UN could increase risks for displaced Palestinians. Since the ceasefire broke down in March, over 616,000 people have been displaced, reversing earlier fragile progress made during the ceasefire period.
