Panasonic Begins Mass Production of 4680 Batteries

Panasonic Energy has completed preparations for mass production of its new 4680 electric vehicle batteries at its renovated Wakayama plant, which is expected to start production soon after obtaining client approval. These larger cylindrical cells, measuring 46mm in diameter and 80mm in height, offer five times the capacity of the previously used 2170 cells, allowing automakers to extend vehicle range while reducing the number of cells required. CEO Kazuo Tadanobu stated that this initiative aligns with the growing global EV market, and the plant aims to employ around 400 staff by March 2025. Additionally, Panasonic has partnered with Mazda to supply next-generation batteries for Mazda's upcoming BEVs, further supporting Japan's transition to electric vehicles. The new production process is designed to be more efficient, requiring fewer components and a reduced workforce for assembly compared to older models.
