Saint Francis University Plans Shift to D-III Athletics

Saint Francis University has announced a significant transition for its athletic programs, moving from NCAA Division I to Division III over the next four years. The decision, made by the Board of Trustees, aims to prioritize student academic success and well-being amid the challenges of competing at a higher level. The Red Flash will complete their Division I tenure in the 2025-26 season before beginning a transition period that will culminate in full Division III status by 2029-30, joining the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. This change is partly influenced by the evolving landscape of college athletics, including complexities related to the transfer portal and NIL demands. The university's president acknowledged the decision might be stressful but aligns with their mission and values. Notably, the men's basketball team, which recently made its second NCAA tournament appearance, will no longer offer athletic scholarships by the 2027-28 season.
