UK Deploys Journalist Safety Officers Across All Police Forces
The UK government has mandated that every police force now has a dedicated Journalist Safety Liaison Officer (JSLO) to protect journalists from rising threats and ensure their safety while reporting in high-risk environments such as protests and crime scenes. This initiative, part of a strengthened partnership between the media, police, and government, aims to provide journalists with a direct point of contact for support and guidance, improving the consistent recording and addressing of crimes against media professionals. The JSLOs are present in all 43 police forces in England and Wales, as well as the British Transport Police and Counter-Terror Policing, complementing existing officers in Scotland and Northern Ireland. UK Media Minister Ian Murray and Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips emphasized the importance of protecting journalists to uphold democratic values and media freedom. The National Union of Journalists and other media organizations have welcomed the move as a crucial milestone amid increasing attacks and intimidation, including online abuse and physical threats. This effort aligns with the government's National Action Plan for the Safety of Journalists, responding to incidents like the murder of Lyra McKee and ongoing concerns about press safety.
