Study Reveals Long COVID Symptoms Vary by Age

A large-scale NIH-funded study has revealed that pediatric postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), commonly referred to as long COVID, presents differently in younger children (ages 6-11) compared to adolescents (ages 12-17). Among younger children, prevalent symptoms include sleep problems and abdominal issues, while adolescents are more likely to report low energy, fatigue, and pain. The study, involving 3,860 participants and conducted under the RECOVER Initiative, aims to address the misconception that long COVID is rare in youth, highlighting that symptoms can manifest variably across age groups. Researchers developed diagnostic indices to help identify those at high risk for long COVID, which underscores the need for tailored care. This research marks an important step in understanding long COVID's impact on children and adolescents, emphasizing the necessity for further studies to optimize treatment strategies. Corresponding author Rachel S. Gross emphasized that characterizing these symptoms is crucial for raising awareness and improving care for affected youth.
