Two American Basketball Players Test Positive for Cannabis in Chinese League
Two American basketball players, Montrezl Dashay Harrell and Troy Akeem Gillenwater, tested positive for carboxy-THC, a cannabis metabolite banned in competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency, during in-competition testing in China's domestic league in April. Both players have waived their rights to 'B' sample tests, and the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) has expressed a zero-tolerance stance on doping, pledging to impose penalties following the anti-doping agency's final decision. Harrell, a noted NBA veteran and former Karl Malone Award winner, was playing for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers, while Gillenwater was with the Guangdong Southern Tigers at the time of testing. Meanwhile, German Olympic team sprint champion Victoria Carl is also involved in doping proceedings after testing positive for clenbuterol, which she claims was ingested unknowingly through medication prescribed for acute bronchitis by a military doctor who failed to highlight the doping risk or apply for a medical exemption. The German Ski Association supports Carl's case, emphasizing that she acted under medical advice and without intent to violate doping rules. Both cases highlight ongoing challenges in anti-doping enforcement across international sports.
