PBS News Anchor Robert MacNeil Dies at 93

Robert MacNeil, co-anchor of 'The MacNeil-Lehrer NewsHour' on PBS, died at 93 of natural causes. MacNeil and Lehrer's disillusionment with the style and content of rival news programs on ABC, CBS, and NBC led to the program's creation. MacNeil began the program in 1975 and anchored it for two decades, with Lehrer taking over after his departure. The program was expanded to an hour in 1983 and renamed 'The MacNeil-Lehrer NewsHour.' MacNeil's and Lehrer's approach to news provided a contrast to the commercial networks' news and won several awards.
