EU to strengthen ties with Vietnam

Josep Borrell Fontelles, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, is on an official visit to Vietnam, aiming to elevate bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. During meetings with Vietnamese officials, he emphasized the importance of Vietnam as a key regional partner and highlighted the EU's commitment to assist in enhancing Vietnam's maritime security and cybersecurity. Both sides acknowledged the progress in their relations, with Vietnam being the largest trading partner of the EU in ASEAN and the effective implementation of various cooperation agreements. Borrell's visit follows the state funeral of late Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, recognizing his contributions to strengthening Vietnam-EU ties. The EU also expressed its interest in supporting Vietnam's energy transition and addressing global challenges together. Borrell's visit is seen as a critical moment to initiate a more robust partnership between the EU and Vietnam.
