UN Accuses Venezuela of Crimes Against Humanity

The United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission has accused the Venezuelan government of committing crimes against humanity during the violent crackdown following the disputed July presidential election. The report details human rights violations, including arbitrary detentions, torture, forced disappearances, and sexual violence, particularly targeting opposition figures and vulnerable populations such as children and individuals with disabilities. Following the elections, which the international community largely rejects as fraudulent, President Nicolás Maduro has continued to assert his authority, leading to increased repression. The UN found that Venezuelan security forces, including the Bolivarian Intelligence Service and military police, played a significant role in these violations. Additionally, the report highlights a troubling trend of violence against minors, with at least 158 detained and subjected to severe mistreatment. As a result of the ongoing crisis, thousands of Venezuelans are fleeing the country, exacerbating the humanitarian situation.
