Santa Cruz Warns of Wharf Donation Scams

Santa Cruz officials are warning residents about donation scams that have emerged following the recent partial collapse of the Municipal Wharf, which lost approximately 150 feet due to high waves. Scammers are falsely claiming to represent local businesses and soliciting donations, exploiting community goodwill during this crisis. Officials emphasize that all legitimate fundraising efforts will be communicated through official city channels, urging residents to report any suspicious activities. The wharf had previously been closed due to damage from earlier storms, and the structural assessment and removal of debris could take several weeks. Mayor Fred Keely noted that rebuilding plans are uncertain, considering the increased risks from climate change. Fortunately, while three individuals fell into the water during the collapse, there were no injuries reported.
