Boston Bridge Renamed for Bill Russell

Mayor Michelle Wu, alongside Governor Maura Healey and Celtics players, officially renamed the North Washington Street Bridge as the William Felton ‘Bill’ Russell Bridge, honoring the NBA legend and civil rights activist who passed away in 2022. The bridge, currently under construction, spans the Charles River, connecting Charlestown to Boston's West End and North End, with a plaque set to be installed in 2025. During the ceremony, speakers highlighted Russell's contributions both on the court, where he won 11 NBA championships, and off the court, where he championed civil rights and education. Jaylen Brown emphasized the significance of the bridge's name, stating that it symbolizes connection and community, echoing Russell's legacy of fostering unity. Russell's widow, Jeannine, expressed pride in the tribute, linking it to his lifelong commitment to social justice. The bridge stands as a testament to Russell's enduring impact on Boston and beyond.
