Odisha Introduces One-Day Menstrual Leave Policy

On India's 78th Independence Day, Odisha's Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida announced a one-day paid menstrual leave for state government and private sector employees, a move seen as a response to the increasing demand for gender-sensitive workplace policies. This leave can be taken on the first or second day of the menstrual cycle and is optional for employees. Odisha's policy follows historical precedents in Bihar, which introduced menstrual leave in 1992, and more recent policies in Kerala and Maharashtra. The Supreme Court has also encouraged the creation of a model menstrual leave policy at the national level. Activists, including an Odia girl at the UN Civil Society Conference, have played a role in advocating for such policies, emphasizing the need for support during menstruation. The Odisha government plans to develop a comprehensive Menstrual Health Policy soon.
