Mikey Varas Named Interim USMNT Coach

Mikey Varas has been appointed as the interim head coach for the U.S. men's national soccer team for upcoming exhibition matches against Canada and New Zealand, while negotiations continue for Mauricio Pochettino to succeed the recently dismissed Gregg Berhalter. Varas has selected a 24-man roster that includes newcomers Diego Kochen and Marlon Fossey, both of whom have yet to appear for the national team. Notable absences due to injury include right back Sergiño Dest, midfielder Tyler Adams, and winger Tim Weah. The U.S. will play Canada on Saturday in Kansas City and New Zealand three days later in Cincinnati. Varas, who previously coached the U.S. under-20 team and led them to notable achievements, was part of Berhalter's staff prior to taking on this interim role. The U.S. Soccer Federation had intended for Varas to lead the team during these September matches, following the trend of previous interim appointments from Berhalter's coaching staff.
