Massachusetts is facing a resurgence of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), prompting health officials to raise the alert level in ten communities, particularly in Plymouth and Worcester counties. The first human case this year, involving an elderly man from Worcester County, has led to aggressive mosquito control measures, including aerial and truck-mounted spraying starting shortly after dusk. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) emphasizes the need for community action to mitigate risks, as EEE is a rare but highly dangerous mosquito-borne disease with a mortality rate of around 30%. Spraying will target high-risk areas, with specific towns identified for both aerial and truck spraying using the pesticide Anvil 10+10, which is EPA-registered and has a longstanding efficacy record. Residents are urged to take personal precautions, such as avoiding outdoor activities during peak mosquito times and eliminating standing water. The last significant EEE outbreak in the state occurred in 2019 and 2020, resulting in several human infections and fatalities.
