Liberal Democratic Party Wins Uzbekistan Elections
In Uzbekistan's parliamentary elections held on October 27, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's Liberal Democratic Party secured a commanding lead with 42.7% of the vote, winning 64 out of 150 seats. The elections marked the country's first under a mixed majority-proportional electoral system, which introduced a new approach to seat allocation. Voter turnout was reported at nearly 75%, with over 15 million votes cast and the presence of numerous international observers aimed at ensuring transparency. However, the elections faced criticism for the lack of genuine opposition, as registered parties were closely aligned with the ruling party, and concerns were raised regarding the transparency of the voting process. The National Revival Democratic Party followed with 29 seats, while other parties also secured representation, indicating a continuation of the current political landscape. Observers from organizations like the OSCE noted significant challenges in realizing fundamental freedoms despite the electoral reforms.
