Bengaluru-based startup Bellatrix Aerospace has unveiled Project 200, an ultra-low earth orbit satellite designed to operate at altitudes of 180-250 km, a significant departure from the traditional 450 km deployment. The satellite employs in-house developed propulsion technology that allows it to remain in orbit for years, overcoming atmospheric drag challenges which typically cause satellites to deorbit within days. This innovative design promises to enhance satellite capabilities, boasting a 50% reduction in communication latency, three times better image resolution, and reduced operational costs. The unveiling was led by Pawan Kumar Goenka, Chairman of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), during the Bengaluru Space Expo 2024. Bellatrix's advancements in propulsion technology, including water-fueled plasma thrusters, could revolutionize applications in Earth observation, telecommunications, and scientific research. The project is viewed as a pivotal step in reimagining the future of satellite technology.
