Spanish Football Federation Plans Presidential Election

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has scheduled elections for a new president on December 16, 2024, following a period of turmoil that began with the resignation of Luis Rubiales in September 2023 after a controversial incident involving player Jenni Hermoso. Pedro Rocha, who succeeded Rubiales as interim president, was suspended in July for exceeding his authority. The elections will also include the selection of 142 members for a new general assembly and a delegate commission for the 2024-2028 term. The urgency of the elections is heightened by warnings from FIFA and UEFA that Spain risks losing its rights to host the 2030 World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco if a president is not elected promptly. The RFEF has faced significant challenges, including a player strike prior to the 2023 Women's World Cup and ongoing legal issues involving Rubiales and Rocha linked to corruption and misconduct allegations. A special committee formed by the Spanish government to oversee the federation's operations will remain in place until the elections are completed.
