UK Culture Secretary Questions BBC Firing Over Gaza Documentary
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has publicly questioned why no one at the BBC has been fired following the airing of the controversial documentary Gaza: How To Survive A Warzone, which was pulled after it was revealed that its 13-year-old narrator is the son of a Hamas official. Nandy has demanded an explanation from the BBC's chair and director-general, emphasizing the need for accountability and clarity on whether the situation constitutes a sackable offense. The BBC has commissioned an independent review led by Peter Johnston, director of editorial complaints and reviews, to determine if editorial guidelines were breached and if disciplinary action is necessary. Alongside this, the BBC is conducting a full audit of the programme's expenditure. The controversy also led the BBC to postpone and ultimately withdraw a separate Gaza documentary, Doctors under Attack, which later aired on Channel 4. Counter-terrorism police are reportedly assessing the matter, given concerns raised by the documentary's production details, including undisclosed affiliations and unusual payment methods related to the narrator's family.
