EU Sets Conditions for Lifting Syria Sanctions

The European Union (EU) has set conditions for lifting sanctions on Syria, demanding assurances from the new interim government regarding the protection of minority rights and women's rights, as well as the establishment of a stable political landscape free from extremism. During a recent meeting in Brussels, EU diplomats indicated that while the transition of power since the regime change on December 8 has been relatively smooth, there is still no clear governance strategy from the interim government led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized that the EU seeks tangible actions, not just promises, to ensure a peaceful future for all Syrians. The EU is hesitant to expand financial support until it sees demonstrable progress in governance and human rights. Additionally, the EU remains the largest humanitarian aid donor to Syria but will not provide a 'blank cheque' for future support. The situation remains uncertain as the interim government navigates its role amid international scrutiny.
