Two Juveniles Charged in Camden Teen's Shooting Death
Two juveniles, a 12-year-old girl from Wilmington, Delaware, and a 16-year-old boy from Camden, have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Xyere Brooks, a standout student and football player at KIPP High School in Camden. The incident happened on June 6, 2025, when the 16-year-old brought a firearm into a home on Thorn Street and the 12-year-old girl recklessly discharged it, striking Brooks, who later died at the hospital. The 12-year-old is charged with second-degree manslaughter and unlawful possession of a weapon, while the 16-year-old faces a charge of unlawful possession of a weapon. Both juveniles surrendered to authorities and were released with conditions pending their next court appearance on July 23. Brooks was remembered by his family and school as a dedicated athlete, student, and friend, with many describing the shooting as a tragic accident. The case has brought renewed attention to the dangers posed by firearms in the hands of minors.
