Penang Expands Export Markets to Mitigate US Tariff Impact

In response to the United States' new import tariffs, Penang is enhancing its export strategies to maintain economic resilience and support local industries. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced the establishment of a Penang Tariff Monitoring Task Force, which will coordinate trade responses and assist affected sectors during this period of uncertainty. The state, which relies on the US for 17% of its exports, is also developing an adaptation toolkit for exporters and SMEs to navigate the evolving trade landscape and explore alternative markets. Penang's export performance remains strong, having achieved RM9.3 billion in February 2025 alone. The task force is part of a broader effort to empower local enterprises and sustain the state's economic growth amidst challenges. With ongoing support from the federal government and regional partners, Penang aims to reinforce its position as a key economic driver for Malaysia.
