NASCAR and Indy 500 Legend Paul Goldsmith Dies at 98
Paul Goldsmith, an iconic figure in American motorsport, passed away at the age of 98 in Munster, Indiana. Known for his success in both motorcycle and auto racing, Goldsmith began his career on motorcycles, winning the Daytona 200 in 1953. He transitioned to auto racing in 1956, winning nine NASCAR Grand National Series races and securing the final NASCAR race on Daytona Beach in 1958. Goldsmith also competed in the Indianapolis 500 six times, achieving his best finish of third place in 1960. Beyond his racing accomplishments, he was instrumental in developing technological innovations like water-circulating technology, a precursor to modern cool-suit technology. Goldsmith retired from competitive racing in 1970 to pursue a career in aviation and left a lasting legacy in multiple Halls of Fame.
