Australian PM Albanese Meets Pope Leo XIV in Vatican

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held a private audience with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, marking the first such meeting between an Australian PM and a pope in 16 years. The two leaders discussed global conflicts, humanitarian concerns, and the role of the Holy See in promoting peace and dialogue. Albanese formally invited Pope Leo to visit Australia in 2028 to attend the 54th International Eucharistic Congress in Sydney, presenting him with a formal letter and gifts including Australian red wine and Indigenous artwork by Ngarrindjeri artist Amanda Westley. In return, the Pope blessed Albanese's mother’s rosary beads, symbolizing a warm exchange between the two. The meeting also underscored the Catholic Church's contribution to Australian society and education, with both leaders expressing mutual appreciation for their countries' relations. Following the Vatican visit, Albanese planned a stopover in Singapore for talks with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, emphasizing ongoing international engagement.
