Illinois Murder Suspect Arrested in Mexico Facing Multiple Charges

Gabriel P. Calixto, accused of fatally stabbing Springfield, Illinois activist Emma Shafer in July 2023, was arrested in Mexico and faces three counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated domestic battery. Calixto, who was brought to the U.S. as a child and lost his legal status after a prior felony conviction, fled the country after being indicted. Illinois authorities, including the Sangamon County State’s Attorney and Springfield Police, are now coordinating extradition proceedings to bring him back to face charges. Emma Shafer was known for her work in immigrant rights, environmental activism, and community engagement. The case attracted political controversy when Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem used Shafer’s murder to criticize Illinois’ sanctuary policies, a move that was condemned by Shafer’s family for misrepresenting her values. Federal agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service and the Department of Justice, assisted in locating and arresting Calixto in Mexico.
