Phoenix Officer Dies After Burglary Response Shooting
Phoenix Police Officer Zane Coolidge, a five-year veteran, died Friday after being shot during a burglary response on Tuesday evening. Coolidge and Officer Matthew Haney were responding to a break-in near 16th Street and McDowell Road when they were met with gunfire from 41-year-old Saul Bal, who has a violent criminal history. Coolidge succumbed to his injuries after a courageous fight, leaving behind a wife and young child. Haney, whose ballistic vest saved his life, was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday and is recovering at home. Phoenix Police Interim Chief Michael Sullivan and Mayor Kate Gallego expressed deep condolences and praised Coolidge's dedication and bravery. Community efforts are underway to support the officers' families, including a fundraiser organized by the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association.
