Memphis Gun Control Measures Face Legal Challenge

Gun rights groups, including Gun Owners of America, have filed a lawsuit against the City of Memphis over recently passed gun control measures, citing a conflict with Tennessee's preemption law which prohibits local gun regulations. The measures, supported by over 80% of Memphis voters, include restrictions on open carry, limits on assault weapons, and the implementation of red flag laws. Despite the local support, these ordinances are currently unenforceable under state law, which has led to criticism from state leaders and the lawsuit aiming to block any future enforcement. Memphis City Council Chairman JB Smiley Jr. condemned the lawsuit as a threat to public safety and disrespectful to Memphis residents, emphasizing that the measures reflect the will of the people to reduce gun violence in a city with a record number of homicides. The council plans to continue advocating for these measures at the state level, despite the legal challenges and the current legal constraints imposed by state law.
