Slovakia Plans Purchase of Embraer C-390 Aircraft

On December 10, Slovakia's Ministry of Defense signed a letter of intent with Brazil to acquire three Embraer C-390 Millennium tactical transport aircraft, initiating formal procurement discussions set to begin in January 2025. The agreement aims to enhance industrial cooperation between Slovakia and Brazil, as well as improve logistics and training synergies with neighboring NATO countries that already operate the C-390, such as Portugal and Hungary. Embraer has stated that the C-390 is the most suitable option for Slovakia's military transport needs, citing its cost efficiency, versatility, and reliability. The C-390 is gaining traction among EU/NATO members, with several countries, including Austria, the Czech Republic, and Sweden, also planning to integrate the aircraft into their fleets. This development comes amid broader efforts by Slovakia to modernize its military capabilities, which include acquiring F-16 fighter jets and new attack helicopters.
