Rachid Mekhloufi, a celebrated Algerian footballer and a key figure in the Algerian fight for independence, has died at the age of 88, as announced by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Mekhloufi, who began his career in Algeria before joining AS Saint-Étienne, was instrumental in the club's success, scoring 151 goals and winning multiple league titles. He notably left France's national team in 1958 to play for the National Liberation Front (FLN) during the Algerian War, sacrificing a World Cup opportunity.
